The "Benefits" of Healthcare Benefits

In the current employment environment, a lot of employers have cut back significantly on the benefit packages they provide their employees.Some, depending on the nature and/or size of the business, don't offer benefits at all.

In the past, the Public (Government) Health Insurance Plan (or OHIP) covered paramedical services such as physiotherapy.Now, in order to qualify for coverage by OHIP, you have to have a doctor's referral note and fit into one of the following categories:

  • be 19 years old or younger;
  • age 65 or older;
  • admitted to hospital overnight;
  • be receiving benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program or Family Works.

However, even if you qualify for OHIP coverage under one of the above, there are limitations to the number of treatments you may receive.In addition, the number of OHIP clinics are few and may have a long waiting list.

So, if you're fortunate enough to have group benefits, you're probably also quite familiar with how dealing with insurance claims and the respective insurance company can sometimes be confusing and even overwhelming.

The type and amount of benefits varies from insurance company to insurance company, employer to employer.Some benefit plans have an annual (calendar year or "benefit" year) dollar maximum, a per visit maximum, a percentage (i.e. 80 %, 100%, unlimited) or a combination of these.Your benefit plan may provide this dollar maximum to physiotherapy services as a stand-alone benefit or it may be combined with other paramedical services such as Chiropractors and Registered Massage Therapists.Your benefit plan may or may not require you to have a physician's referral note for physiotherapy treatment.If so, then the insurance company may require you to submit this note manually prior to releasing any benefits.

At Movement Solutions Physiotherapy, we offer the convenience of direct electronic billing.This method allows for timely payment, whether benefits are reimbursed to the clinic or to the insured plan member, depending on the plan set up.It is convenient and environmentally friendly as it eliminates the need to complete a paper claim form.It also eliminates the need for you to save and organize your receipts for submitting in a lump sum or risk missing the time limitation to submit claims as stipulated in the terms of your group benefit plan.

To that end, here at Movement Solutions Physiotherapy, we are able to direct bill to the following insurance providers:

SunLife, Great-West Life, Manulife, Desjardins, Johnson Inc., Industrial Alliance, Green Shield Canada, Chamber of Commerce Group, Cowan, Standard Life, Cinup, Maximum Benefit & Johnston Group, First Canadian.

We strive to make your visit a pleasant experience. Direct billing is just one more way we hope to accomplish this.
