4 Tips for Alleviating Aches and Pains When Working at Your Computer
If you follow nutrition and diet trends you may have heard of the Paleo Diet or the Caveman Diet. To summarize, it consists of eating the same foods early humans would have eaten, including meat, nuts, berries and excluding processed and refined foods. Proponents of this diet claim that eating like a “hunter-gatherer” suits our evolutionary biology. Comparatively the physical activity level of North Americans has drastically changed when compared to our “hunter-gatherer” ancestors. They moved much more hunting down a wolly mammoth than we do driving to the grocery store!
I think we can all agree that the human body is designed for movement. Some of the injuries we treat at Movement Solutions result from athletic injuries, falls or accidents, but many aches and pains are the unfortunate consequence of a lack of movement or prolonged periods of inactivity.
There are a couple of different SOLUTIONS to this problem. The first would be to play the lottery and quit your desk job! But, if like me you love your work, (or you’re still waiting for your numbers to turn up), don’t despair!
- Ensure that you have an optimal ergonomic set up of your workstation to alleviate strain on your joints and tissues. If you use a laptop get an external keyboard and mouse and elevate your screen to eye level.
- Ensure that your keyboard is at the correct height to alleviate tension on your neck and upper extremities.
- Take a stand, literally! Frequent breaks promote circulation to your tissues.
- Ensure that you get your daily dose of physical activity (10000 steps a day keep the doctor away). A simple pedometer or a more high tech gadget such as a Fitbit or Nike Fuel band can be motivational.
